Choosing the Right Window Film
Updated 09/16/22
There are many options of window film available, so it is important that you know what you are looking for. Assess your space and needs and choose the film that you feel would best suit your needs.
Decorative Window Films
Applicable on any flat glass. With these window films you can enjoy enhanced home décor, privacy, and increased satisfaction.
Commercial & Residential Window Films
Provide an array of advantages that include reduced glare, decreased heat and 99% harmful UV rejection.
Security Window Films
A cost effective means through which you can protect both your windows and your assets. When properly installed, security films help reinforce the windows they are attached to and provide additional resistance against breakage from impact. In the case of glass breakage, the security film prevents dangerous flying shards from causing damage by holding the individual pieces together.
Useful Terms When Comparing Window Films
Total Solar Energy Rejection
The percent of total solar energy (heat) rejected by the window film. It equals the solar reflectance plus the part of solar absorption which is re-radiated outward. The higher the number, the better it is.
Visible Light Transmission
The percent of total visible light that passes through the window film. Measures how dark the film is. The lower the number, the darker the film.
Visible Light Reflectance
The percent of total visible light that is reflected by the window film. The higher the number, the shinier the appearance.
Ultraviolet (UV) Radiation Rejection
The percent of total harmful ultraviolet light that is prevented from passing through the window film. The higher the rejection rate, the safer it is for your environment.
Shading Coefficient
The ratio of solar heat gain passing through the window film to the solar heat gain that occurs under the same conditions if the window was made of clear, unshaded double strength window glass. The lower the number, the better solar shading qualities of the window film. Utility companies often endorse films with a shading coefficient of .50 or lower.
